I’m about to go fishing, and it’s going to be good. Two days of rain, rising river levels and the brown trout are in peak pre-spawn form. It’ll be medium streamers fished on a floating or intermediate line in the upper river. As soon as I’m done writing this, I’m going to go get my gear ready. It won’t take long, this gear-readying — I fished yesterday as well. Fall is full of options. If it’s sunny I’m just as likely to be in the uplands chasing a bird dog around, or in a tree hoping a buck walks by. But fall, like the spring, usually offers up a best option, and today that best option is very clearly to go trout fishing with streamers. Like Jordan did the other day…
This past weekend, and this upcoming weekend, offered conditions opposite of these last couple of days. Right now it’s low clouds and rain. But we have bright sunny days coming, some of which will be warm. We actually did okay in the sun over the weekend on dry and dropper patterns, some blind dry fly fishing, and on small streamers. We even found pods of fish eating the #20 fall BWOs. Sun is not the end of the world when the water temperatures are perfect. And a beautiful fall day is something to behold.
Our best streamer colors have been light: white, olive, cream, tan, etc. This can change in the sun, and don’t be afraid of fishing black. We have also been doing well swinging soft hackles, especially on the North and South Branches. The rivers are going to be a little high after this rain but that’s a good thing. I’m just happy to have the water in the rivers and the trout so fat and happy. Jake and Joe found this beauty a few days ago on a nice sunny afternoon.
Well, that’s it. It’s one of the best months of the year, and it’s time for me to go get my stuff ready and hit the river. Lance just sent me a picture of a sweet brown trout. So, yeah, see ya!
